“We Are the World” is a 2026 punk-rock cover by Spike and the Gimme Gimmes, the current incarnation of the long-running punk cover supergroup Me First and the Gimme Gimmes. Released on July 22, 2026 through Fat Wreck Chords, the recording transforms the famous 1985 charity anthem into a fast, irreverent punk-rock singalong while preserving the song’s original communal spirit.

The track was issued as a benefit for the Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, with proceeds from the physical single supporting the nonprofit’s work assisting career musicians and music-industry workers facing financial hardship related to illness, disability, mental-health issues and age-related problems.

Background

Spike and the Gimme Gimmes grew out of Me First and the Gimme Gimmes, the San Francisco punk-rock supergroup formed in the 1990s and known almost entirely for radical punk reinterpretations of songs from outside the traditional punk canon.

Over the years, the Gimmes have turned pop standards, country songs, show tunes, soul, R&B and soft-rock hits into short, loud and often comic punk arrangements.

The 2026 lineup centers on longtime vocalist Spike Slawson, joined by an unusually deep collection of punk-rock veterans:

CJ Ramone is best known as a member of The Ramones; Reis is associated with Rocket From the Crypt, Drive Like Jehu and Hot Snakes; Kiley is a longtime member of Strung Out; and Pinch spent roughly two decades behind the drums for The Damned.

The Original “We Are the World”

The original “We Are the World” was written by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie and produced by Quincy Jones.

It was recorded on January 28, 1985 by the superstar collective USA for Africa, assembled to raise money for famine relief in Africa. More than 40 major recording artists participated, including Jackson, Richie, Stevie Wonder, Bruce Springsteen, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Diana Ross, Ray Charles, Cyndi Lauper, Billy Joel, Willie Nelson and many others.

Released in March 1985, the original became one of the most recognizable charity recordings in popular-music history and ultimately generated tens of millions of dollars for humanitarian relief.

More than four decades later, Spike and the Gimme Gimmes revisited the same idea—this time assembling a large cast from the punk, alternative, ska, garage and independent-music communities.

2026 Punk-Rock Version

The Gimmes’ version retains the large ensemble concept of the original record but replaces the polished mid-1980s pop production with the group’s characteristic punk-rock approach.

For the recording, the five members of Spike and the Gimme Gimmes were joined by a remarkable collection of guest vocalists drawn from several generations of underground and alternative music. Fat Wreck Chords and Sweet Relief list the participants as:

Together with Spike Slawson, CJ Ramone, John Reis, Jake Kiley and Pinch, the recording effectively becomes a snapshot of several generations of punk and alternative culture.

Charity Single

Like its 1985 inspiration, the 2026 version was conceived around a charitable purpose.

Fat Wreck Chords released a special 7-inch single featuring:

The label announced that all proceeds from sales of the single would benefit Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.

Sweet Relief is a nonprofit organization founded in 1994 that provides emergency financial assistance to professional musicians, touring personnel and other music-industry workers dealing with health problems, disability and financial hardship.

That makes the Gimmes’ version more than a parody or novelty cover: the musicians effectively recreated the charitable structure of the original 1985 recording, but directed the proceeds toward people working within the music community itself.

Music Video

An official music video for “We Are the World” was released by Fat Wreck Chords on July 22, 2026, alongside the digital single.

Much like the original USA for Africa recording, the video emphasizes the unusually large number of performers involved, but presents the concept through the humorous, self-aware and deliberately rough-edged aesthetic associated with the Gimmes.

The contrast is central to the appeal: one of the most earnest and ambitious pop charity songs ever recorded is reconstructed by musicians rooted in punk rock, ska, hardcore, garage rock and underground music.

Spike and the Gimme Gimmes Shit the Bed

“We Are the World” was also announced as a track from the forthcoming album Spike and the Gimme Gimmes Shit the Bed. Fat Wreck Chords described the single as a preview of the new record, while digital services list the album for release later in 2026.

The project continues the Gimmes’ long-running tradition of taking material that would seem completely incompatible with punk rock and making precisely that incompatibility the point.

Significance

The 2026 “We Are the World” works on several levels at once.

It is a punk-rock cover of one of the most famous pop records of the 1980s.

It is a large-scale collaboration connecting members of the Ramones, Descendents, Adolescents, Pennywise, Rise Against, Swingin’ Utters, Bad Cop/Bad Cop, The Bronx, The Aggrolites, The Dwarves, The Damned, Strung Out, Rocket From the Crypt and numerous other artists.

And, importantly, it reproduces the charitable intent behind the original recording by raising money for musicians and music-industry workers through Sweet Relief Musicians Fund.

More than 40 years after USA for Africa assembled a generation of mainstream stars around the same song, Spike and the Gimme Gimmes created an alternative version of the concept—a deliberately chaotic punk-rock “We Are the World” for the underground music community.
