This archival footage captures Alice in Chains vocalist Layne Staley and bassist Mike Starr during a soundcheck on August 16, 1991, while the Seattle band was opening for Van Halen at the Coca-Cola Lakewood Amphitheatre in Atlanta, Georgia. At the time, Alice in Chains was touring in support of its debut studio album, Facelift. Released in 1990, the album introduced the band’s combination of heavy metal, alternative rock, brooding harmonies, and the distinctive vocal partnership of Layne Staley and guitarist Jerry Cantrell. By 1991, the group had begun reaching a much larger audience through extensive touring and the growing success of songs such as “Man in the Box.”

The tour placed Alice in Chains before mainstream hard-rock audiences shortly before the explosive commercial growth of alternative and grunge music. Although the band was closely associated with Seattle’s grunge movement, its early work also drew heavily from metal, hard rock, and the darker side of 1970s heavy music.

This soundcheck therefore captures more than a rehearsal. It preserves Alice in Chains at the point where the group was moving from club-level recognition toward becoming one of the defining rock bands of the 1990s.
