Description
Nirvana Special — Aired May 2nd, 2005 Over 20‑year‑old broadcast from Bohemia Visual Music featuring a rare Nirvana interview and archival material curated specifically for KPHE‑TV 44. This special was co‑sponsored by The Edge 107, one of the key alternative rock stations in Phoenix at the time, giving the program a strong local push and tying it directly into the city’s mid‑2000s alt‑rock culture.
The episode blends classic Nirvana footage with commentary and a seldom‑seen interview segment, making it one of the more unique pieces from the BVM vault. Produced during the early KPHE‑TV era, this special reflects the station’s mission in 2006: resurfacing influential alternative music moments and pairing them with regional radio partners who helped shape the scene.
The Nirvana Special stands out as one of the most distinctive pieces from the BVMTV vault. It features a seldom‑seen interview segment, curated performance footage, and commentary that contextualizes Nirvana’s influence nearly a decade after Kurt Cobain’s passing. The program was co‑sponsored by The Edge 107, one of Phoenix’s defining alternative rock stations of the era, giving the special a strong regional identity and tying it directly into the city’s mid‑2000s alt‑rock ecosystem.
For BVMTV (Bohemia Visual Music), this special represents the network’s mission in 2006:
- preserving alternative music history
- resurfacing rare and culturally important footage
- partnering with local radio and underground scenes
- broadcasting content that mainstream TV wouldn’t touch
Nearly 20 years later, this episode remains a snapshot of KPHE‑TV 44’s raw, independent spirit — a moment when Phoenix’s underground media, alternative radio, and music‑video culture intersected on the airwaves.
⭐ The Bohemia Visual Music Era (2003–2006)
In October 2003, Phoenix media producers Jeff Crawford and Jennifer Harris Crawford leased KPHE from US Interactive and transformed the station into the home of Bohemia Visual Music (BVM). The Crawfords had operated Bohemia AfterDark since 1982, and KPHE became their 24/7 music‑video channel — a rare independent outlet dedicated entirely to alternative, underground, and archival music programming.
In January 2004, Lotus Communications purchased KPHE but continued to let the Crawfords operate BVM. Although Lotus initially planned to launch family‑friendly Spanish‑language programming, BVM remained on the air.
In March 2005, KPHE moved from channel 19 to channel 44, relocated its transmitter to the South Mountain antenna farm, and upgraded its signal in preparation for digital broadcasting. This period — 2005 through mid‑2006 — is widely remembered as the KPHE‑TV 44 / Bohemia Visual Music era, when the station’s underground identity was at its peak.
This is the era that produced the Nirvana Special (May 2nd, 2005), co‑sponsored by The Edge 107, and many of the vaulted shows you’re now restoring.
