Background

Following the initial rollout of their third studio album, “The Bug” was released as a promotional single on April 24, 2024. Frontwoman Lila Ramani revealed that the skeleton of the song originated in a Nebraska motel room during one of the band’s earliest DIY tours. After discovering she was covered in bedbug bites, a restless, sleepless Ramani paced the floor singing a melody that ultimately became the track’s distinctive outro loop. [1]
Over several years of evolution before final recording, the narrative meaning shifted from literal insects to a deeper psychological metaphor. The band notes that the “bug” represents a lingering, inescapable fixation—whether it is a person, a dynamic relationship, an obsessive thought, or an intrusive feeling that returns late at night. [1, 2]

Music Video

The official music video, directed by Haoyan of America, heavily relies on surrealism and distorted visual perspectives. To encapsulate the song’s themes, much of the performance is filmed using multi-lens setups, thermal infrared imaging, and low-angle tracking. These visual choices mimic a literal compound-eye, bug’s-eye view skittering across floors, navigating dark environments, and scaling instruments while the band plays.
